EMM started out as the product of unconventional thinking.
We opened for business in December of 1987 under the name Emerging Markets Management (“EMM”), and were one of the first investment management firms to offer investors direct access to a broad group of emerging economies. In June of 2011, EMM was acquired by Ashmore Group plc and changed its name to Ashmore EMM, L.L.C.
We pioneered investment in emerging markets at a time when placing assets in so-called “Third World” countries was considered by many to be unusual and risky. We believed strongly in the potential of “emerging” markets as a win-win investment scenario. Our idea was to match a growing pool of institutional assets in the developed world with promising companies in parts of the world with huge populations, undiscovered growth potential and rising importance.
We began with a single private fund and a broad, emerging markets strategy based on fundamental value. Our growth and continued vitality over more than 20 years reflects a pioneer spirit and the success of the asset class we helped to establish. We now offer a diverse and comprehensive set of equity investment strategies for a clientele of respected institutional investors.
We enjoy looking for new opportunities. We were among the first international investment firms to offer access to the frontier equity markets of Africa and the Middle East and to offer specialized emerging markets strategies that focus on small capitalization companies. Our mission is to continue seeking the best that emerging markets have to offer.
